This imposing fortress was ordered in 1385 by Nicolò II d'Este as a defense not only against foreign attacks but above all against the local population that had shown their discontent with the Este rule.
Castello Estense - Ferrara, Emilia Romagna The architect was Bartolino from Novara; the new building was attached to the ancient Torre dei Leoni, to be surrounded by four towers in the corners connected through high walls. For a century the castle was mainly a military stronghold, then from 1450 onwards it was turned into a luxurious mansion.
