Images from the Gran Sasso, Abruzzo
The Gran Sasso d'Italia is the highest continental mountain chain of the Apennines, contained entirely in the Abruzzo region in the provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara.
Until the sixteenth century, the area of the Gran Sasso was characterized by the presence of huge forests. From the 16th and 17th century intensive logging operations began to provide new pastures. The Aquilan side is presently mostly devoted to sheep and cattle breeding.
