L'Aquila is the capital of Abruzzo and of its province; located east of Rome, thanks to its favorable position it is a good starting point to visit the province and surroundings.
Due to the thousands of displaced citizens and ongoing reconstruction after the earthquake of 6 april 2009, there may be difficulties in finding tourist accommodation in the city.

Located about 100 km east of Rome, L'Aquila can easily be reached by A24, exit L'Aquila Est or Ovest. From the Adriatic it is connected to the A14 through the A24. State Road SS17 connects the city to Rieti to the north-west and Pescara on the Adriatic Sea.

There are train connections from L'Aquila to Sulmona and Terni [you can find trains timetables and tickets on the official Trenitalia website]

90 km away there is the Pescara airport where it will be possible to pick up a rental car. There is also a small tourist airport in L'Aquila. Rome airports can also be reached in 2-3 hours depending on the traffic.
