History
The town was founded in ancient times by the Dauni, ancient Italic inhabitants of Apulia. In 323 BC Bovino participated in the Samnite wars against the Romans, who destroyed it and rebuilt it as Vibinum, making it into a colony status and later as a municipium.
After the fall of the Roman empire it was conquered by Lombards and destroyed during the war with the Byzantines. In 876 AD under Emperor Basilius I the walls around Bovino were rebuilt, and the typical narrow streets were laid out. The plague of 1656 killed the majority of the local population, only 1,200 people survived.
