Montemitro, Province of Campobasso, Molise

This is one of the Molise centres founded by refugees from the Balkans. It was founded in 1461 by a Croatian community under the leadership of Giorgio Castriota Skanderberg. The population still speaks a Slavic dialect.

  • Territory: hilly
  • Population: about 350 inhabitants in 2017
  • Zip/postal code: 86030
  • Dialing Area Code: +39 0874
  • Patron Saint: Santa Lucia, celebrated on the first Friday in May.

With Acquaviva Collecroce and San Felice del Molise this village is being studied by anthropologists and language specialists, and the population feel they are both Molisani and Croatians at the same time. They still keep ancient traditions, like the hand-weaving of blankets and tablecloths, and have a deep devotion to their patron saint Lucia, native of Ragusa (today Dubrovnick); also the folk songs are a rich heritage of this place.

What to see

  • The church of Santa Lucia, with an interesting portal of 14th century.
