The small town has its roots in the Lombard age, towards the end of the 6th century AD, when an outpost of German people ("barbarian" meant foreign) settled here, on the border with the territory of the Byzantine city of Senigallia, between the ancient Roman cities of Ostra and Suasa, by then abandoned.
