Torre le Nocelle, Province of Avellino, Campania

On a rocky spur on the left side of the hill of Montemiletto, Torre le Nocelle rose as a defense and sighting post on the river Calore, in an important transit area for travellers to the nearby Mirabella, the ancient Aeclanum.
The name of the town is made up of the words "Torre" (=tower) and "Nocelle", the local name of walnuts, abundant in the area. The territory of the municipality belongs to the "Unione dei comuni Medio Calore".

The origins of the center date back to Roman and pre-Roman times, as shown by items and ruins found in the area in Viticeto, from the remains of a Roman aqueduct along the river Calore and three marble columns coming from a pagan temple, preserved today in the church of S. Ciriaco.

In the Middle Ages the place was one of the watchtower bulwarks of the nearby feuds of Montefusco and Montemiletto and was mentioned as "Turrecella" as early as 1280. In later documents it is mentioned as "Torre di Montefuscolo" because it was one of the castles that surrounded the barony of Montefusco.
