Ciminà, Calabria

Ciminà rises on a crest of Monte Petrotondo and dominates the Condojanni fiumara (a fiumara is a usually short stream with a wide, stony bed, with abundance of water in winter and autumn and a very low water flow for the rest of the year) and the Platì valley. Its territory is included in the Aspromonte National Park.

It was founded after the 10th century AD as a shelter for the citizens of Locri escaping from Muslim raids. The historical center still today preserves fine palaces and houses built with the special yellow/purple tufa, found only around Ciminà.
