This mainly agricultural town on the Apennine uplands was once an important centre for woodwork and cutlery artisans. A recent earthquake in 1980 caused wide damages to the ancient buildings.

What to see

  • The Baroque church of Santa Maria degli Angeli with a fine left portal, hosting inside paintings by Girolamo Cenatiempo, Girolamo Bresciano and Filippo Ceppaluni.
  • The small hamlet of Lagopesole, which was a hunting resort for emperor Frederick II of Swabia (1242-50) who built here a rich castle, with a fine private mansion inside.
