It is the least populated municipality in the province of Matera, and with an area of only 14.93 sq km, is the third smallest in Basilicata.

The first written evidence of the existence of the village dates back to a bull of 1060 by the Diocese of Tricarico. The name comes from "Caerellius" presumably a Roman centurion who received these lands as a reward for his military service. Cirigliano was a regular rest place for travellers going from Heraclea to Tricarico.


What to see

  • The Historical Centre surrounded by walls and towers, built around the imposing castle with its impressive tower and an adjoining oval chapel where is preserved among others, a Pietà of the 17th century nestled on a small temple of decorated wood.
  • The Castle, bought by the Coppola from the Iannellis family for 13,000 ducats in 1595, then acquired in 1750 by the Formica barons, who still retain the property.
