Abruzzese at the Trade Center / Gli abruzzesi al lavoro
al Trade Center, by Barbara Scorrano
There were couples in their honeymoon, tourists, professionals. Many called to reassure their families here in Abruzzo. Linda Salvatorelli, 29, from Vasto, was working at Merryl Lynch, on the 5th floor of the Tower that was hit first. Though her boss told them to keep quiet and stay at their workstations, she decided to leave. That saved her life.
Giovanni Zincani, 39, from Pescara, works in a laywer firm just beside the Towers. He was some minutes late that morning, and raised his eyes just to see the first plane crash into the tower. His wife was also there in another office, but only late in the evening they could finally meet each other safely home. Roberta Marini and her husband Marco de Plano took refuge in the underground. Raffaella Ghezzi, 26, was due on a visit to the Towers, but was late that morning. When she reached the place, she saw people jumping from the windows. Lorena Lisi, from Sant'Eusanio Forconese, was working on the 97th floor of the second Tower. She called her mother to reassure her that she was unhurt, but they did not let her out. Her last call.
