L'Aquila - A celebrated restaurant / Le Tre Marie

Paolo Scipioni is the great-grandson of Candelora, founder of the "Tre Marie", a historical restaurant taking its name from a chapel devoted to Maria Cleofe, Maria Maddalena and Maria Vergine madre di Cristo. The chapel was then demolished, but in 1920 Paolo's father had a stained glass window made with the sacred images. Famous customers enjoyed the traditional cuisine of the restaurant, among them Giuseppe Ungaretti, Federico Fellini, Fernandel, Emilio Greco, King Gustav of Sweden.

Some years ago there was a family reunion with grandchildren from Canada. In Città Sant'Angelo Elena Dejoannes will celebrate her 108th birthday on 28 august. Still full of energy, she is a lover of culture and met many intellectuals in her life.

Donata Di Biase from Lettomanoppello, born 1891, emigrated to America with her husband over 80 years ago, and lives in Portland with her 90-year-old daughter. She visited her native land 35 years ago. Her husband died in an accident and she raised three children alone working as a tailoress.

A new book on the Battle of Tagliacozzo / La vittoria di Carlo d'Angiò su Corradino, by Fabrizio Santamaita
On 23 aug 1268 the Swabian period ended and the Angevin occupation started in Italy. In the Piani Palentini, near Tagliacozzo, Charles of Anjou, the brother of the King of France, called by the Pope to fight against the descendants of Frederick II of Swabia, Manfred and Corradino, won a historical battle. The young Prince Corradino narrowly escaped but was then captured and executed. Charles of Anjou ordered the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria to be built on the spot. All the events of that period in "La battaglia di Tagliacozzo" by Paolo Fiorani.
