From Pope Celestino V to San Giustino / Da papa Celestino a S. Giustino , by Mario d'Alessandro
The most famous theft in Abruzzo was in the late 1980's that of the body of hermit saint Pietro Angelerio (later Pope Celestino V) from Santa Maria di Collemaggio, L'Aquila, which was found some days later in a small countryside cemetery nearby. But such episodes have become more common. In 1979 the processional cross of master goldsmith Nicola da Guardiagrele was stolen, and some of its pieces were later found in Germany. In 1983 in the Cattedrale of San Giustino, Chieti the silver bust of the saint, also a work by Nicola da Guardiagrele dated 1455, was stolen with the saint's relics. Monsignor Antonio Chinni opened a website to collect information.
