Last december within the joint Abruzzo-Marches Progetto Piceni an exhibition was inaugurated in Frankfurt über Main; interest has now grown on the ancient Adriatic civilizations of the late Bronze Age, finally defeated by the Romans in 295 B.C. In an international congress in Pescara Padre Heinrich Pfeiffer reconstructs the story of the Volto Santo in Manoppello - he is sure it is the Veronica (true icon) of Jesus. In 1608 the veil mysteriously disappered from a chapel in Rome then appeared again in 1618 in Manoppello, to be forgotten for almost 400 years. The image disappears in direct light - scientific analysis has shown no trace of paint. The story goes that nobleman De Fabritiis received the icon from a soldier's wife in exchange for her husband's freedom, then he donated the relique to the Capucine friars. Recent studies began when sister Blandina Paschalis Schloemer showed the perfect correspondence between the Volto Santo and the Sindone in Turin.
