An archeologist's comments on the Piceni Exhibition / Commenti di un archeologo sulla mostra dei Piceni, by Prof. Alfredo Carpineto - Chieti
«Some points must be cleared about the Piceni, whom the press described as "mysterious people". The Indo-European people (comprising the Italici and therefore also the Osco-Sabellici, the group to which the Piceni belong), lived for thousands of years in Europe together, branching later into Celts, Germans, Slavs, Italici - Dr Krahein the 1930's called them "ancient Europeans" as a group. Then the Italici settled first in Illyria, then in the Italian peninsula, in Umbria, Veneto, and the Sannio-Sabina area. Those who stayed in central Europe (among them the Celts) founded in Bohemia a civilization which we call Unetice or Hallstatt; their articrafts on show in Frankfurt, and are strikingly similar to many found in Marches. But recent studies have shown the typical shields of the Piceni came from the Sabelli peoples living in Marsica. And the Sabelli in the various areas took the names of their areas, not the opposite: the Volsci - highlands; Equi - plains; Teati, hills; Marruci, marshes. In Italy there was not a region that gave name to the Piceni»
