Popoli - Polemics on the etymology / Polemica sull'origine del nome
Not everybody liked the ethymological explanation suggested by mayor Angelo Cafarelli on TV last Tuesday: Popoli would derive from the many "populi" or peoples, that inhabited the place. Historians say instead there are two more likely origins. One, from the Latin Populus meaning poplar, of which there are many in the area. The other, documented in San Clemente a Casauria, comes from the name of "Castrum Pauperi" given to the Cantelmo castle, (town of the poor) because persecuted Christian took refuge here.
