CARAPELLE CALVISIO - The smallest municipality, 46 families, 110 inhabitants, not even a coffee bar, but the mayor says life is fine there / Il paese più piccolo d'Abruzzo. Ha 46 famiglie. Non c'è neanche un bar. Appena 110 abitanti. Il sindaco: «Ma qui si vive bene» - by Claudio Valente
Only on a Sunday you can meet someone here, and these Sundays are reserved to the olive harvest. Some very strange things happen: four Jeovah Witnesses knock at all doors, but nobody is there. A no parking sign, in a desert place, but a car parked exactly below the sign. Four clean containers for different waste collection (empty). Everything is in Piazza D'Annunzio: the Town Hall, post office, a phone booth, a fountain and a view of Rocca Calascio. Mayor Domenico Di
Cesare, 36, a construction worker, has elected as his vice his adversary in the elections. The village is just one large family. The municipal secretary works two mornings here, another two mornings in Castelvecchio Calvisio, and the rest of the time in Capestrano and Ofena. Ermanno Florio, originary of Carapelle, is an orchestra director in New York. Between 1972 and 1977 no child was born in Carapelle, now there are 11 primary school children, while Calascio has only four and Santo Stefano di Sessanio two.

CARAPELLE CALVISIO - 1300 years' history from the barons to emigration / 1300 anni all'ombra del Gran Sasso, dalla grande Baronia all'emigrazione
"Carapellas" was first recorded in the 8th century. In the 11th century it was a Barony with Castelvecchio Calvisio, Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Calascio, Rocca Calascio, and Castel del Monte. Those heroic times were recorded in the movie "Ladyhawke" with Rutgen Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. In 1910 Carapelle had 1200 inhabitants but a first wave of emigration during WWI and then in the 1950's emptied the village. In Toronto there is a community from Carapelle
Calvisio of 650 people, six times the population of Carapelle today.
