The story - Carlo Autiero on the six months that the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi spent in Abruzzo as a clandestine in 1944, taking refuge in Scanno and on the Maiella / La storia/Carlo Autiero racconta i sei mesi trascorsi da Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in Abruzzo: era l'autunno del '44 «Il mio amico Presidente» «Arrivò a Scanno a piedi, vivemmo da clandestini. Poi la Maiella» - by Antonio Mancini
To escape Nazi persecutions, Ciampi took refuge in Scanno, where also Guido Calogero, his former university teacher, was under hiding. They spoke of the future of Italy from the ruins of Fascism, and visited friends in Sulmona, "Santuccio", Sante Cantelmi, and his wife Angiolina, where local anti-fascists usually met. The Cantelmi family later emigrated to Argentina, where their daughter is still living. The partisans in Sulmona organized the journey through the Maiella when the weather was very bad, so that it was more difficult for the Germans to discover them. Ciampi was safely brought beyond German lines, and after decades that old friendship still remains.
