Pescasseroli, culture and cuisine in Europe's green Paradise / Pescasseroli, cultura e cucina nel paradiso verde d'Europa - by Antonio Mancini
Named after the massive mountain ("pieschio") closing its valley, Pescasseroli is in the heart of the oldest Italian park, originally a Royal hunting reserve. In 1912 Emidio Agostinone called the area "the land of bears", and emphasized that no estate tax ("fondiaria") was paid. After the first harvest, land owners allowed pasture and the income went to the Istituto delle Erbe seconde which paid taxes for the whole town. Rare animals and plants have found here a refuge. The administration favours an environment-friendly tourism, which brings here one million visitors a year. The "poor" traditional cuisine is maintained with the berries, cheese, dairy produce, meat, the icy Sangro and Fondillo water.
