Ovindoli - the high-altitude jewel that was able to conquer the Pope / Il gioiello d'alta quota
che seppe conquistare il Papa - by Pino Veri
OVINDOLI - The name comes from Covus venti. A cableway takes you up to 2,000 m a.s.l. to lie in the sun, than go back down to meet your friends in the village: a nice, cool summer for people otehrwise baking in Rome. But before the 1960's here there was almost only sheep-raising and agriculture. The cableway to Mount Magnola was the great fortune of Ovindoli. One of the earliest owners, Charles Rogers, was the USA vice consul in Rome. His daughter married a Roosevelt and called his son Theodore Roosevelt III. While in Pescasseroli winter tourism is for an elite, here it is more "popular". The most pressing problem now is parking space, and the new mayor, Simone Angelosante, 35, says he'll find a solution. Mass tourism? He does not care, only reminds you also the Pope came to ski here.

SCANNO. In Valle di Grave a new reservation for this vulture, which disappeared from the Apennines decades ago, will soon be established. The griffin (Gypus Fulvus) is a big vulture and can weigh up to 10 kg, with a wing opening up to 2.5 metres. It is a highly social animal and, since he only feeds on carrions, non only it does not damage agriculture, but is useful in eliminating disease coming from dead animals.
