With the Lenten Season almost here I thought it would be nice to share my family's Easter traditions with all of you wonderful people. On Easter morning we like so many other people from Abruzzo and Molise make a huge frittata. Well our family took huge to beyond huge. When I was little I remember my Gramma Provident making the frittata with the help of my uncles cracking the eggs. The frittata that she made contained over 100 eggs, her homemade sweet sausage (it was dried all winter under the celler door), veal cutlet, and fresh ricotta cheese. This was cooked on top of the stove and all the men took turns stirring it. The big moment came when it was time to flip it. Everyone held their breath until it came out o.k. When it was finished it was served with her beautiful Easter bread and a ricotta pie in the shape of a big turnover. There was an array of fresh fruit, and coffee and juice, and the colored eggs that each grandchild brought to the table for gram. In turn Gram made each child a bunny or chick doll cookie with an egg baked in it's belly, and covered in pastel icing and candy spinkles. Gram has been gone for over 25 years now and each of her decendants families keep the tradition alive. My daughter is 21 and this the 3rd year she will be making the frittata for us. She uses about 8 dozen eggs. My daughter in law recieved the ricotta pie recipie and does that very well. I make the Easter bread exactley as gram did. One of Grams daughters still is involved with her family's cooking . Their family is so large that their frittata has grown to 18 dozen eggs! All cooked in one very large pan on top of the stove. My point is Easter was always my favorite holiday as a child and it still is because of la famiglia. My children are grown up now and it pleases me that they ,too want to keep the tradition alive. Everybody, teach your children their heritage and keep traditions alive, it makes for beautiful memories that last lifetimes. By the way my gram and pap came from Montagano, near Campobasso in Molise.

Testimonial to:
Anthony Coladonato, Son of Abruzzo, RIP 9-11-01 WTC NYC
Hello, Everybody!
I'm sharing with you an email and website I just recieved from Salvatore Coladonato. I began to know Sal on Friday Sept 14 when he appeared on Fox News talking about his brother Anthony who had perished in the fall of the twin towers.
Instantly,I searched all New York phonebook listings for Coladonato & sent out a dozen letters trying to make contact. You see, my maternal family is Coladonato & I've worked on the Coladonato tree for years. Coladonato is a very rare name, so it's easy to find out where Coladonatos are and which towns they've been in both in Italy and in the USA.
In Abruzzo, the focal point for Coladonatos is Fallascoso, now a legal part of Torricella Peligna. Other towns with Coladonatos are: Pennadomo, Fara San Martino. As soon as Sal can get the info from his elderly father, I'll begin to patch our 2 trees together, although Ellis Island info has already predicted for me the connection.
Please email Sal to help us cheer him up! It's been bad for him & he's been carrying the weight of his family & his brother's since 9-11. Email to:
Sal Coladonato" daddysmc at hotmail-dot-com
Anthony is survived by a very large family & Sal's been the guy doing the hard work keeping the gang together. I know Sal needs support and would love to hear from you.
Here's Sal's letter & please see his brother at the website:

Hi Eugene, I know you haven't heard from me in sometime. But like anything else in this life, there there doesn't seem to be enough time to do everything. Hope everything is fine with you & your family. We are all hanging in over here, but the hurt seems to grow even more, but this is something we are going to have to get through.
Just so you know what you cousin looked like; there is a web site put out by Cantor Fitzgerald. Go to this site:
WWW.CANTORFAMILIES.COM, go to family tribute
& click on "C"
& go to Anthony Coladonato
& read some of the tributes that family & friends had to say about him. Again thank you for your thoughts & information regarding our family. I'll pass this over to my father & when I have him over I will call you so you can talk to him yourself. Please keep in contact. We will talk soon.
Take care,
Your cousin Sal :)

Hello to fellow Melchiorres! My father was born in Introdacqua, Italy. His name is Rafaele. My grandfather's name was Antonio and my grandmother's name was Brigida.
My knowledge of Italian is limited since my parents believed that it was very important fro us to be bilingual (English and French). They didn't want to confuse us. Even though my Italian speech is limited, the local people in Introdacqua were extra friendly when I visited in 1997. I was very impressed.
Anyone with any information whatsoever is invited to send me a message!
Thanks!

My Great-grandfather, Alfonso Pantoni was from Controguerra in the province of Teramo. He arrived in the USA on June 11, 1903 at the age of 19. He was Born 11-03-1884 and died 08-09-1972. I believe he had 3 brothers and possibly 1 sister. I've been told that he owned olive groves which were sold close to or after his death. I am interested in finding any information on relatives or parents. He married Concetta Mango (also from Italy) in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, USA.
The name Pantoni was changed sometime in the 1920's to Pantone. They had 9 children the oldest was Adalene "Lee" Pantone. Any Information would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Reader,
This 100-year Transition from Abruzzo to America has had it's bumps along the way. While my mom's family had always kept some contact with the old boot, my dad's didn't. In 1936, my dad's parents died from wild mushroom poisoning leaving 10 orphans. Thus, the connection to Abruzzo was cut. I have met & stayed with the Abruzzese Neros several times since my first trip back in 1977. However, just last month, we were able to reestablish contact with an elderly Argentine woman and I was able to grant her tearful request: the chance to speak with her long-deceased Uncle Santo's son in the USA, my dad.
I, as an Abruzzese-American, would like to express my agreement with the author of the 'General rules to post your entry' when I read of "... foreign domination, sufferings and hardships."
I have been researching my family tree since 1977, when I spent a month with my great aunt Mary in Lettopalena, provincia di Chieti. I began to write it in the basement of the ancestral church of my grandparents during the summer of 1980. To date the tree contains 1440 names, dates & places. I must say that every entry has a document behind it to prove it's veracity. Dealing with those archive repository employees, be they church or civil government, hasn't been easy all the time. Most are usually helpful--not overly, mind you. Some in fact and in deed are very outrageous in their unwillingness to understand our wish, desire, need to reroot our ancestry to our own lives.
The reader may be aware that I have spent 6 months pleading with a certain office for the information from my great aunt's birth certificate. After the first family tree was handed out in 1980, a certain someone yelled fowl with no evidence whatsoever that my mom's father & my great aunt were only half related??!! Sure!
To prove my work was valid I needed my great aunt's birth certificate.I stressed with a certain archive repository office in both languages that I don't need the copy, that I just need her parents names & ages at the time of her birth. Also, I sent a cousin of my from a town 30 miles away to ask for the info. They humilliated him, sending him back home empty-handed!
Well, finally I found someone who understands how it feels to be an Abruzzese-American flat up against the wall of an Italian archives office! He's a lawyer. He understood the 'issue,' (problem is now taboo) and is doing the work pro bono. Isn't it preposterous that a lawyer's got to go to get names & ages from my great aunt's birth certificate?????? Hello, is this the real Abruzzese Hospitality & Warmth!? I read of "foreign domination, sufferings and hardships." I agree wholeheartedly! Please, though, think about it a little more multi-directional sense for just a moment.Thank you & have a Good 1!

I am looking to find exsisting relatives in the Province of Pescara. My Great-Grandparents were Giovanni (John) Profenno and Antonia (Toni) Marinelli. My Granmother Elvira Profenno-Simpson is still living in the United States and although she can point me to names of relatives she does not know of anyones whereabouts. I myself only speak English which makes it extremely hard to search through the web with all the Italian formatted sites. I am only looking for myself to gain a better knowledge of where I come from and in hopes to one day travel there to meet my relatives. Please feel free to email me at: witchywoman21403 at YAHOOdotCOM if you happen to know any of my relatives or happen to be one yourself. Know that if you reply in Italian it will be extremely hard for me to decipher what you are telling me :)
Many, many thanks in advance!

Dear Lucrezia,
you are right, a bit more explanation is necessary. With some practice it is not difficult to use these sites even if you do not know the language. We plan to have a very detailed explanation online soon in the genealogy section.
You just write the surname in the field "cognome" and then you write either the municipality ("Comune") if you know it, or the province ("Provincia": L'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara, Teramo, Isernia, Campobasso etc).

Interested in the family name BONITATIBUS from the town of Pettorano-sul-Gizio. My great-grandfather's
name was CESIDIO BONITATIBUS. He came to the USA approximately 1900 -- may have come to USA
multiple times. However, by 1905 he was pretty much settled in USA in the Philadelphia area and married to
MARIA CRISTINA FACCIOLA. They did go for a time to West Virginia in the early 1910s but eventually returned to
Philadelphia. His father's name was ANGELO BONITATIBUS (d. 1916/1917 Italy) and
his mother's maiden name was MARIANINA RUGGIERO (d. 1940s Avella, PA). Have done a lot of researching with
LDS microfilms and have been able to trace this line back to the late 1790s. However, I am interested in the story
behind the name -- since it isn't exactly Italian, but pure Latin.
Thanking you in advance for any kind help.
Sincerely,
Katherine Condon

Hi,
My name is Greg Somaio. I haven't had much luck finding other Somaios in the world. I know that it was my great-great-grandfather, Giacomo Somaio, who brought the family name to São Paulo, Brazil in the early 1800's.
My great-grandfather is Frederico Somaio, my grandfather is Antônio Somaio. My father's name is Osvaldo Somaio, brother of Frederico, Wanderlei, Maria Inez and Ana Lucia.
Most of the Somaio families in the US and in the state of São Paulo and the one family in Dourados, MS, Brazil are realtives. I know of two Somaio families in Chieti. One in Lanciano, one in Crecchio. I'd like to know of more Somaio's in the world, especially in Italy and surrounding countries. If anybody can help, please email me.

Hello
I am trying to trace my family history, and also to see if I still have relatives living in Italy.
My information may not be totally acurate, but I will tell what I know.
My family comes from Vasto in the Abruzzo region. My great-grandparents came to NY sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's. I believe my great-grandfather (Michael Canci) came here first, and then sent for my great-grandmother (Acursia Canci) later on. I also think that my great-grandfather might have had a brother named Luigi, but I am not sure of this.
I was also told as a child that I had some family of ours relocate to Australia.
My aunt...Letticia Canci was the only one who kept in contact with any of my relatives, but she has since passed, and I am trying to pick up where she left off.
Please help me if you can ....I would love to here from anyone.

Please call Tribunale di Lanciano for info re: piccone maria, 9 june 1901, Fallascoso/Torricella Peligna.
I'm looking for someone who would call the tribunale di Lanciano (Chieti, Abruzzo) and ask the information concerning my great aunt
piccone maria
born 9 june 1901 Fallascoso/Torricella Peligna
I need only her parents' names and ages at her birth. From there I can get the older information in Chieti's archivio di stato.
The record is not at the archivio di stato di chieti.
All records from 1800 to 1899 are in chieti.
All records from 1900 to present are in lanciano.
I would thank you forever if you could email me:
her parents' names and ages at time of her birth.
I don't need a copy of anything; I only need the information.
Thank you,

My knowledge of Italian is limited since my parents believed that it was very important fro us to be bilingual (English and French). They didn't want to confuse us. Even though my Italian speech is limited, the local people in Introdacqua were extra friendly when I visited in 1997. I was very impressed.

Please, though, think about it a little more multi-directional sense for just a moment.Thank you & have a Good 1!

you are right, a bit more explanation is necessary. With some practice it is not difficult to use these sites even if you do not know the language. We plan to have a very detailed explanation online soon in the genealogy section.
You just write the surname in the field "cognome" and then you write either the municipality ("Comune") if you know it, or the province ("Provincia": L'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara, Teramo, Isernia, Campobasso etc).

name was CESIDIO BONITATIBUS.
Sincerely,

Se il Tribunale di Lanciano dice che non trova niente sopra piccone
maria, nata 9 giunio 1901, Fallascoso/Torricella peligna, Chieti,
forse si trovera'
la sorella Berenice piccone, nata nel 1907
sorella Carmella piccone, nata nel 1905
fratello Emedio Francesco piccone, nata 1909
Per me e' lo stello. Ho bisogno della identita' degli suoi genitori e

Are ther any relative with this family name in the USA?Thanks in advance.

Thank you,
Eugene Nero
