La fija mè, Abruzzo traditional song

This anonymous song of the folk tradition is similar to the "Partenza", that is the abandonment of the parents' home when the daughter is taken away by the joyful band to join the groom.
The song has a melancholy meaning, the loss of a child. The mother says goodbye to her daughter, her "mother's heart", by magnifying her gifts. The mother remembers moments of her daughter's life with her, as when she rolled out the dough from the rolling pin and the "pops" could be heard up to the mountain.

Dialect version

E quann' la fija mè facéve li ssagne
li sclucche se sendea alla muntagne
e core della mamma, e della mamma sè,
massera vè la bbanda e se la porta la fija mè.

E quann' la fija mè facéve lu sughe,
l'addore se sendea a Sante Luche

e core della mamma, e della mamma sè,

e core della mamma, e della mamma sè,
massera vè la bbanda e se la porta la fija mè.

English version

When my daughter made pasta
blows could be heard up to the mountain
o mother's heart, her mother's heart
tonight comes the band to take her away.

When my daughter made the tomato sauce
the perfume could be smelt as far as San Luca
o mother's heart, her mother's heart
tonight comes the band to take her away.

When my daughter went to Mass
All the young men went after her
o mother's heart, her mother's heart
tonight comes the band to take her away.

When my daughter was in love
kisses she gave heart to heart
o mother's heart, her mother's heart
tonight comes the band to take her away.
