Villa of Livia
The Villa of Livia was recently reopened after important restoration works.
Livia Drusilla Claudia (Rome, 30 Jan 58 BC -28 Sept 29 AD), was the third wife of Emperor Augustus, the mother of Tiberius and Drusus, grandmother of Claudius and Germanicus, great-grandmother of Caligula and great-great-grandmother of Nero. Actually Augustus and Livia lived on the Palatine Hill, and the Villa was a residence of rest, away from the bustle of city activities.

The Villa is in the area of Prima Porta, north of Rome, and was first brought to light in 1863. On the site, a statue of Augustus was found, known as the "Prima Porta", now in the Vatican Museums.
In 1951 the wall paintings in the underground chamber were detached and transferred to the National Roman Museum in Palazzo Massimo. Later, the empty spaces were filled with panels to faithfully reproduce the frescoes.
The recent restoration recreates the images of the frescoes on gauze sheets, alternating, thanks to a dual lighting system timer, the masonry with a projection of the originally painted wall.
