The Verruca castle
La Rocca della Verruca is an ancient fortification built by the Republic of Pisa in a position to dominate the whole plain of Pisa and the Arno Valley. A scene of bloody battles between Pisa and Florence, it was a stronghold of the former when Pisa had fallen to the enemy. On the site there was a fortification already in 780 AD, but the present fortress was built in the 13th century, and was an active military structure until the final fall of Pisa in 1503. In 1509 the fortress was rebuilt by Antonio da Sangallo to which are attributed the two polygonal bastions, and Luca Caprina who is credited with the large cylindrical tower on an edge of the perimeter. The fortress was finally abandoned after it was no more a frontier position.
