It was a complex structure of works of art, archives and public offices, and a meeting place of intellectuals, around the main complex of the rich Library with texts in Greek and Latin. The square, 110 x 105 meters, was occupied by a luxurious garden and surrounded by arcades on three sides while the fourth side, the northern one, had a colonnade.
Templum Pacis
Templum Pacis was built by Emperor Vespasian (9-79 AD), after the successful suppression of the Jewish revolt in 71, and completed by Galen (130-200 AD). In 192 AD, under Marcus Aurelius Commodus (161-192 AD), the Templum Pacis was severely damaged by fire and was repaired a few years later by Septimius Severus (145-211 AD). The Templum Pacis was located next to the Forum of Augustus, separated only by the ancient Argileto road between the Roman Forum and Esquiline. Today its remains are largely hidden beneath the Via dei Fori Imperiali in central Rome.
