Finding of the Riace bronzes
This video about the discovery of the "Riace bronzes" was part of the beautiful underwater archeology documentary In the Ancient Sea (1983), directed by Pippo Cappellano. On August 16, 1972 Stefano Mariottini (an amateur diver from Rome) plunged into the Ionian Sea, 300 meters from the coast of Riace and found, 25 feet deep, partially hidden in the sand of the sea bottom, the bronze statues of two warriors, dating from the fifth century BC, slightly larger than normal size. They were to become world-famous as the Riace Bronzes.
