Ara Pacis Augustae
The Ara Pacis Augustae (=altar of Augustus' Peace) is located on the Lungotevere, next to the Mausoleum of Augustus, in the area Via del Corso - Piazza di Spagna. It is one of the most important examples of Augustan art and is intended to symbolize the peace and prosperity after the Civil Wars. The great new shrine of white marble and glass, inaugurated in 2006, has the function to protect the monument and also houses a museum. The marble reliefs were also completely coloured at the time. The colors were virtually recreated recently with a system of digital lights.

History
The Ara Pacis Augustae was an altar dedicated by Augustus in 9 BC to Peace, placed in an area of the Campus Martius where military victories were celebrated. Its aim was to celebrate the Pax Romana, a peace conquered with the defeat of all other kingdoms and populations, and maintained with total military control. A famous Roman saying was "Si vis pacem, para bellum" (= if you want peace, prepare war).

- augure (accented on the first syllable), plural auguri, was an ancient Roman priest that interpreted the flights of birds for prophecies.
- Instead augurio (accented on the second syllable), plural auguri, means "good wishes".
- bue (= ox) has an irregular plural: buoi.
