Spelling Changes, Invariable and Irregular Nouns

Spelling Changes

• Nouns ending in -cia and -gia: if before the -cia and -gia there is a vowel, no spelling change. If before the -cia and -gia there is a consonant, the "i" is lost.
• Nouns in -ca and -ga: to maintain the sound "k", the plural is spelt -che and -ghe. Masculine nouns in -co and -go have no clear rule and may have either form, -chi and ghi or -ci and -gi.
