How to use the Italian White Pages

The official, continuously updated website for the Italian phone directory is paginebianche.it/ This tutorial shows how to use the white pages effectively to find addresses of people and offices. Open the link "paginebianche" in a new window, if you need to continue reading this tutorial.
Also, be aware that more and more people are doing away with home telephones, and you might need other resources to find surnames of residents. For many smaller places, we have lists of surnames, in the section "Surnames divided by region", extracted from the phone directories of the mid-1990s.

Search the Italian Phonebook

To find present addresses you will need exact spelling of the surname; then you can limit the research by village or town, or province (two-letter abbreviation, listed on this page) or region of origin (i.e. Napoli refers to the city, NA to the province), or region (20 regions, below in CAPITAL letters) of origin.

Write the Name and Surname

There is no language selection, so search fields are in Italian. Below is an example of the first screen that you will see. It says "Trova persone e professionisti" (=find people or professional) and below three choices: nome (search by name), indirizzo (search by address), numero telefono (=search by phone number). Here we'll be examining just the "nome" option.

In the search field «Nome (=first name), Cognome (=surname) o Ragione Sociale (=company name)» write the name and surname of the person you are searching for. The surname might be enough. If you need to write for birth or other certificates, insert in the field the word "Municipio" or "Comune" (=townhall), if you are looking for a parish church write "Parrocchia".

Write the Place

You can then proceed to write the name of the place (which must be in Italian, that is not "Venice" but "Venezia") in the search field «Località (=place), Indirizzo (=address - street, etc)». The place can be a village, town, province or region. If the surname you are searching is common and there are over 200 in Italy, the Pagine Bianche search engine supplies max 200 results. If you do not insert the place, the engine will search throughout Italy.

If you want to limit to a Province, you have to write the province abbreviation (for example, AV will return results all over the Province of Avellino). If you do not write anything in this field, the research will be made all over Italy. If the surname you are searching is common and there are over 200 in Italy, the Pagine Bianche search engine supplies max 200 results. If you do not insert the place, the engine will search throughout Italy. The tutorial below will show you how to use the white pages effectively to find addresses of people and offices.

Cerca - Search

Finally, click on the button "Cerca" (=search) and wait for the results. If your search returned too many results, you can always limit to a smaller area (region or province), or, conversely, widen the results to a province or region. This function might be useful also to find all the places in a province where a given surname appears in the phone directory.
